A Bonspiel for Beginners Only!

So you're a curler now and are looking to experience a curling bonspiel? This is an excellent place to start. Bonspiels can be intimidating for some beginner curlers, but this event is designed specifically for you!

Please note: This event is meant for those who have a basic curling knowledge - lessons will not be taught during the event.

About the Event

Beginners only! U5 means that your team must have Under 5 Years (U5) experience to register for this event. The idea is to give new teams the chance to experience a bonspiel, have some fun, and gain some experience and confidence by facing off against teams of a similar skill level.

Each team in the event is allowed one player on their team with more than 5 years of experience. However, this player is not allowed to curl at the skip position. They are allowed to play a supporting role only. In fact, we would encourage the U5 players to switch roles throughout the event and give everyone the chance to try the various positions. A player with more experience could be a valuable support to team members with little to no experience playing at the skip position.

Although we will not be asking for proof of number of years curling, we would ask all registrants to respect the spirit of the sport and ensure that their team fits the outlined criteria. If your team is unsure if this event is a good fit for you, please feel free to reach out to us!

When is the Bonspiel?

The Avonair will host one U5 Beginner Bonspiel in the 2022/23 Season. The event will take place on February 11, 2023 starting at 9:00 am. The event is one day only and will conclude sometime in the early evening.

How Much?

The cost for the U5 Beginner Dayspiel is $75.00/Person. Payment is required in advance of the start of the event. For your money, you will get the following:

• Three 4 end games of curling
• A $20.00/win payout for each game
• Breakfast, lunch, and snacks throughout the day
• A $100 draw to the button competition
• Prizes

A approximate breakdown of your $75.00 fee is shown below:

• $25.00 for ice preparation and staff
• $40.00 for meals and snacks
• $10.00 for prizes and payouts

Please note: If you have specific dietary restrictions, we will need to know at least a week in advance of the event. 

What do I Need to Bring?

Yourself and a team!

If you have curling equipment, please bring that along. Otherwise, all players are responsible for bringing clean, indoor shoes and appropriate clothing. Helmets are not required, but participants are encouraged to consider helmet use. The Avonair will provide grippers, sliders, stabilizers, and brooms to anyone who requires them.

Please note: Clean shoes are mandatory. It is extremely important that shoes worn outside in the snow, water, and gravel not come on to our curling ice. If a participant comes to the event with inappropriate shoes, it is likely that they will be unable to participate on the ice.

Who Can Join?

Anyone and everyone with 5 years or less curling experience!

Although most of our programs and events throughout the season are designed for participants 18 years and older, if families wish to participate in the event with their children, this would be an excellent event! All we would ask is that there is a 1 adult to 1 child ratio on the ice at all times. Also, anyone under the age of 12 is required to wear a helmet.

As noted above, each team is allowed one player with more than 5 years experience. That player will not be allowed to play at the skip position throughout the event - they are to play a supporting role only.

Conveniently we are directly across from the NAIT LRT Station if you choose to take public transit. If you do drive, we have plenty of parking outside our facility.
